The Wedding Breakfast

Breakfast is the most important occasion in a wedding which indicates “breaking of the fast”. The bride and the groom follow a period of fasting before the wedding ceremony. This is the first meal that they have during the wedding ceremony.

The actual wedding breakfast is traditionally not a meal. In pre-Reformation times the wedding ceremony used to be held after Mass, which meant that the bride and groom would be fasting. After the wedding ceremony the priest would bless and pass around wine, cakes and other sweets. In Catholic custom, everyone must fast since day break till the Mass is over. So, for the bride and groom this would literally be their first meal after the wedding.

Another significant feature of the wedding breakfast is that it is a family unit event in its truest form. It is one event, where every associate of the family who has had some role in the marriage. Furthermore, the families of the bridegroom and the bride also eat jointly for the first time, after the nuptial union has been established between the bride and the groom.

The wedding may have just one large table on which the guests sit down for the wedding breakfast. Or, there can be a facing table and other round tables at which the guests are seated. The groom sits on the right of the bride in the two center chairs of the facing table and the families of the bride and groom sit as couples on the table. The bride’s family will sit at her side and the groom’s family will sit at his side. The best man and the bridesmaid sit at the corners of the facing table.

A toastmaster makes sure that the proper etiquettes are followed and that the three traditional toasts are made. The groom responds to the first toast on the bride’s behalf. The best man responds to the second toast on behalf of the bridesmaid. Toasts are made by the fathers of the groom and the bride and are then followed by other family and friends. This ritual can be entertaining and at times hilarious.
